Dear Gentlemen

Are the German couple cycling North? Perhaps with a lasso of strong rope you may harness their combined Teutonic leg-power for a wee while.

Yours aye

What a Breeze – Saturday 29th May 2010

Over 70 cyclists from near and far converged on Glasgow Green, to take part in the first ever performance in the UK of Mauricio Kagel’s Eine Brise (A Breeze).

This was a concert with a difference. The conductor had a loud hailer; instructions were simultaneously translated into sign language; section leaders were identified by balloons tied to their bikes; the instruments were bicycle bells, horns and vocals; the “score” was a series of hand painted symbols along the route; and the audience of supporters, passers-by, picnickers and bemused tourists lined up on the grass to watch and listen.

I was there on Glasgow Green when the breeze blew –
Were you?

Alex and Olly said: “Come, bring your bike,
Bring a bell or a horn, you can sing if you like.
And if you can whistle, or even just hum,
Please come, join our orchestra – it’ll be fun.

“We’re off to the Arctic, like Dummy Jim,
We need you to help us help children like him.
They can’t hear our music, but Rachel will sign
them the tune of our concert – it’ll be fine.”

So we came with our mountain bikes, racers, and tourers.
We came in our hundreds – well, seventy-two of us!
Cycles with baskets, bikes that would fold,
Bicycles painted red, blue, green and gold.

There were children and grandparents, babies “on tow”,
Lined up in formation, three to a row.
We did some practice, tried a few notes,
Then on with the helmets and off with the coats!

From the arch to the needle we followed the score,
Swung round in a circle and did it once more.
We pedalled and whistled, bells rang and horns blew,
And the folk on the ground heard our breeze passing through…
and through…

Like a high floating ribbon, the sound rose and fell
In a great celebration of bicycle bell.

So – were you there, on Glasgow Green, when the breeze blew?

I was!
