DUMMY JIM RIDES OUT TO BROOKLYN USA

Dummy Jim is to be the subject of a special presentation at Union Docs in Brooklyn, NYC.

Film maker Matt Hulse will be reading extracts from Duthie’s journal and will share exclusive sneak previews of the edit-in-progress. He will talk about his unusual decade-long journey to complete the film, a journey rich with creative offshoots, including a soundtrack album, live cinema events, an artist’s book, knitwear, a deaf film festival and the much sought after ‘Dummy Jam’ (‘a terrible pun, an excellent preserve’).

Joining Hulse on stage will be Aaron Moore (‘Volcano The Bear’), seen here suspended by his ankles.

Aaron will be performing an improvised set live to images from Dummy Jim’s own 16mm home movie footage, material that only came to light recently, discovered in an attic in the Scottish fishing village St Combs.

DUMMY JIM TOURS WITH THE RAPPIN’ COWBOY

Saddle Up & Roll ‘Em Out! The Rappin’ Cowboy and Dummy Jim are coming to a cinema near YOU … if you live in Scotland.

Filmmakers Matt Hulse & Elizabeth Lawrence are taking to the road with their films during September 2011, screening sneaky previews of Hulse’s epic maverick film project Dummy Jim & Lawrence’s full-length feature film ‘Roll Out, Cowboy – a documentary’.

The Orkney dates will feature musical accompaniment from Duncan Maclean and the Driftwood Cowboys and there’ll be Q&A’s with Hulse and Lawrence throughout the tour.

Tickets available online from each venue, with the exception of Orkney and Fraserburgh – just turn up.

DUMMY JIM AT EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL (UNBOUND)

There will be a special BSL interpreted Dummy Jim event as part of UNBOUND at this year’s Edinburgh International Book Festival on Friday 19th August (9-11pm).

This free event is hosted by artist film maker Matt Hulse, including musical performances from The One Ensemble and Sarah Kenchington.

The evening will include exclusive previews from the film-in-progress ‘Dummy Jim’, readings from the book that started it all - James Duthie’s journal ‘I Cycled Into The Arctic Circle’ (1951) – and offer insights into Matt’s forthcoming artist’s book project, supported by Creative Scotland.

Actor Samuel Dore – who plays the role of Dummy Jim – will talk about his experience working on the film, along with other folk involved in the elaborate project.

History in the making!

The Dummy Jim website is powered by Green Hosting, run by ethical web design company Make Hay.

To celebrate James Duthie’s birthday last year (May 8th), Make Hay kindly offered to provide a year’s hosting free of charge.

As a result we have been able to put more resources directly into the production of the film. This year, out of the blue, they offered to repeat the favour.

DUMMY JIM SHOOT MAY 2011

Matt Hulse and a lean crew have been filming scenes from Dummy Jim.

Based in Cairnbulg and Inverallochy (Aberdeenshire), the shoot culminated with a busy coffee morning at Invercairn Community Hall, featuring the Inverallochy School Flute Band, The One Ensemble & Sarah Kenchington followed by a busy street scene shot in driving rain.

In addition to collaborating with the school, the Dummy Jim team also worked with the RNLI lifeboat at Fraserburgh, The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses, Fraserburgh Heritage Centre, Aden Country Park, Fraserburgh Junior Arts, Hillview Holiday Cottages, Maggie’s Hoosie and Cairnbulg Gospel Hall.

Thank you to all those who have supported the production.

Editing of the film begins in June and completion is expected by early 2012.

Samuel Dore

A final fund-raising push in underway, with Geoff Huggins running the Edinburgh Marathon on May 22nd, raising money equally for Dummy Jim and RNLI Fraserburgh.

BANFF & BUCHAN ARTS FORUM AWARD

Dummy Jim has been awarded a Project Support grant from the Banff & Buchan Arts Forum. The sum of £1000 (the maximum awarded for this type of grant) will be used to support filming in the region later in 2011.

DUMMY JIM IN USA: TREES PLANTED

On Sunday 14th November 2010, the first trees of the Duthie Memorial Wood were planted outside Jengo’s Playhouse at the Cucalorus Film Festival, Wilmington NC.
A total of eight trees were planted at the suggestion of Dummy Jim director Matt Hulse in order to help offset the carbon emissions of festival attendees.

More trees will follow, creating – over time – shade, fresh air and picnic spots.

DUMMY JIM IN USA: WORK IN PROGRESS

The director of the film Dummy Jim will present work-in-progress at this year’s Cucalorus Film Festival in North Carolina. Director Matt Hulse will peel back mystique and delve into process with a presentation on the Dummy Jim project, showing clips from the website, with alternative versions, out-takes, bloopers, bits from the Moonstone film makers lab, bits from the Dummy Jim concerts, a few means and a couple of methods, all tossed together with dashes of politics. The method is the message.

DOUNE THE RABBIT HOLE: DUMMY JIM LIVE CONCERT

The One Ensemble & Sarah Kenchington will be performing music and sounds from the album Dummy Jim at Doune The Rabbit Hole, a new weekend-long summer festival at Doune in Scotland.

The performance will take place after midnight on Friday 30th July 2010 and will include Super 8mm film projections shot on location along the route of James Duthie’s original cycling trip to the Arctic Circle in 1951.

Rumour has it that Olly & Alex (pictured) – recently returned from their epic mission by bike to Nordkapp – will make a guest appearance.

The festival have promised a share of profits to Dummy Jim.
